Cricket

Cricket is traditionally one of Merton’s strongest sports and the 2017 season proved no exception. Under the leadership of Harry George and Harry Clements, the league side achieved promotion back to Division 1 while the cuppers team defied all odds on a run to the Cup Final, making the season one of the most successful in recent memory.

The cricket club is also very social; 2017 saw the Old Boys return for a day of festivities as well as the annual beer match contested with Mansfield. There’s a level for everyone, and the captain for 2018, opening bowler and all-round good bloke Joshua Navarajasegaran, will be happy to field questions from anyone keen to get involved. Navarajasegaran, who matched his previous best of 21 with the bat during his debut season with Ms, was interviewed exclusively in partnership with renowned Facebook meme page, ‘Bowl him a short one, see if he can pull like his sister’:

Bowl him a short one: Afternoon, Nav. While you’re sipping on your cold one, could you outline the style of play your team is going to employ this year?

Nav: My Ms side will have an attacking and aggressive approach with bat and ball, coupled with semi decent chat and great fun on and off the field.

Bowl him a short one: Sounds jokes. What was the finest moment in the Ms’ season last year?

Nav: Beating Worcester to reach the final of Cuppers by defending 107. A true whole team performance.

Bowl him a short one: What are your ambitions for the season ahead?

Nav: They are threefold. 1) Going one better than last season and winning Cuppers; 2) Putting in a strong performance in division 1 after promotion last season; 3) Getting as many people involved.

Bowl him a short one: Now for some quickfire questions. Eminem, or the MnMs?

Nav: the MnMs.

Bowl him a short one: Thought as much. British and Irish Lions, or British and Irish Zoo Association?

Nav: Lions.

Bowl him a short one: Alright then. Winning the toss and electing to do what you overheard the opposition captain saying he was going to do just to spite him, or pulling out of the delivery just as the bowler is about to bowl and spend three minutes making your teammates move the sightscreen as your excuse?

Nav: Pulling out of the delivery just as the bowler is about to bowl and spend three minutes making your teammates move the sightscreen as your excuse?

Bowl him a short one: It’s a no-brainer really, that one. Well thanks very much for your time Nav; as a gift, we’d like to present you with this big bag of cans. Have a great season and up the Ms.
