The Neave Society is Merton’s very own debating society, named after one of our many famous alumni Airey Neave, who was the MP for Abingdon before his death in 1979. Traditionally we discuss topics with a political slant, but over the last two terms we’ve covered education, the arts, gender equality, the media, and terrorism. Unlike almost every other university debating platform, the Neave Society is totally informal and only open to Mertonians, so it’s a very friendly atmosphere, complete with wine and snacks! In the past we’ve also hosted political speakers, and hope to have a few more over the next year! Have a look at our Facebook page for upcoming events, we meet fortnightly on Monday evenings in the JCR.
