OUSU Welfare Provision

OUSU Welfare Provision

The following is a very brief summary of the many welfare services provided and promoted by OUSU. For more detailed information go to the OUSU website, or email Sandy Downs, the OUSU Vice-President for Welfare and Equal Opportunities.

Welfare Publications

The OUSU website has a variety of pages with advice on various welfare-related issues, from living out to unplanned pregnancy. To view these pages, click here. Some of the autonomous campaigns (see below) also produce their own handbooks.

Student Advice Service

The Student Union’s Advice Service offers free and confidential information, advice and advocacy for all Oxford students; it is confidential and entirely impartial. It employs one permanent, part-time Student Advisor, and all other members are OUSU sabbatical officers – elected Oxford students who have either just finished their degrees, or are taking a sabbatical year out in the middle of them. The Service normally runs between 10am and 5.30pm on weekdays, though appointments can sometimes be arranged outside these hours if needs be.

It is best to make an appointment through the Student Advisor by emailing advice@ousu.org, or phoning 01865 (2)88466. For more information about the service, visit http://ousu.org/advice/student-advice-service/.

OUSU also offers support to a number of autonomous campaigns, including those listed below. Each campaign has its own constitution, is financially supported by OUSU, can make and implement its own policy and has a vote at OUSU Council. The campaigns exist to ensure that there is always a space in the OUSU democratic structure where student’s concerned about issues relevant to these campaigns have a safe and supportive environment in which to discuss these issues. However, many of them run regular events as well as providing representation to the Student Union, and they all have a welfare bent; to see the full list, visit the OUSU campaigns page.
