Sports & Societies
Sport at Merton is a great way to have some fun and meet new people. Whatever your commitment and ability levels, we have teams in a variety of sports: hockey, rowing, football, netball, cricket, canoe polo to name but a few. There’s space for everyone and new players are always welcome to every team; simply e-mail the relevant captain (these are listed on the individual sport’s page, but where in doubt, feel free to contact the Sports Rep). Teams in larger sports are sometimes paired with Mansfield College, and all compete in regular league and cup competitions (Cuppers) against other colleges.
If you’d like to get involved have a look at the sports pages get in touch with the relevant captain. If you don’t see your sport listed, contact the Sports’ Rep. (firstname.lastname@example.org), who will do their best to help you. Life at university and at Merton isn’t just about work but also about trying new things and having a great time – and where better than on the sports field.
Merton JCR is a vibrant social and academic community, and our student societies put on a range of interesting events. On this website you will find information on the Music Society, which has its own choir and orchestra; our speakers and debating societies, the Bodley Club and the Neave Society; and the College’s Classics society, the Chalcenterics.
AMALGAS is a fund to help Merton and Mansfield sports clubs with their running costs. The committee meets once a term to deal with claims for essential expenses. Typical costs that can be claimed include Cuppers entry fees, cost of essential equipment, referee fees and so forth. More info about what can be claimed and an application form can be found here.
